The city of Clermont was founded in 1884 and received its name after A.F. Wrotnowski, who was the manager of the Clermont Improvement Company and responsible for land development. The city was officially incorporated in 1916 and became a popular spot for orange and other citrus groves. This served as the foundation of the economy through the mid-20th century, with tourism becoming increasingly popular. Since its humble beginnings, Clermont has emerged as one of the most desirable places to reside in Lake County.
